Present tense vs. past tense. Is present tense annoying to read, or does it make the action going on in the story immediate, and therefore more impactful. Well, 'impactful' isn't a word, but you know what I mean?

My personal opinion, frankly, is that it depends on the type and length of the story. Present tense, the immediate *now*, works best in short pieces, it's very difficult to maintain the energy required over a multi-chaptered work. Plus, I find it harder to read.

Thank you! I've often wondered, because I find present tense easier to write, technically, but it leaves the story broken up. You just can't maintain the momentum throughout a longer piece. It's kind of hard to break the habit of doing it once you start and I was wondering how much effort to devote to it, and didn't know if reading present tense bothered anyone but me.
